IKEA Sectional Upgrade

To round out the last of our recent family room updates, we have to introduce our huge IKEA sectional! And of course it comes with a story : )

Since this house has two “living rooms” the couch from our last place ended up in the formal living room, and we began the hunt for new furniture for our family room. We wanted something large enough to fill the space and of course comfy, so after shopping around quite a bit, we ended up between West Elm’s Henry sofa (plus TBD Homegoods chairs) or IKEA’s Karlstad sectional. In the end, we decided that the sectional was more in line with our vision for the room, so off the IKEA we went!

Our store happened to be having a friends and family sale on the series, and we ran down to find the last one sitting on the shelf, so into our carts it went. We thought we had just won the lottery, until we got outside and realized that only one of the three massive boxes fit into M’s Jeep. After completely unboxing every part, cushion and armrest we somehow managed to clown-car-style cram it all into M’s Jeep. It was quite the accomplishment and we cracked up the entire way home! I now know why people bring U-Hauls when they shop there : ) So for anyone who was shopping at IKEA that day, you’re welcome for the entertainment!

I’ll leave out the part where we frantically ran around thinking we left all of the hardware back in one of the boxes at the curb at the store. It caused a minor heart attack after we were so proud of our tetris-like packing, but crisis averted, it was found and the couch was assembled!

The only bummer about the trip was that the cover we picked up (aka the only one left) was not what I thought it was. It said it was dark gray, but ended up being practically black (see the pic above from last fall- it was very dark!). We lived with it for a while, but it felt so heavy in the room and I cursed every animal hair that stuck to it. Before it turned into a matter of who gets to stay- the cat or the couch, the pet guardian angel came through and the lighter gray cover we wanted came back in stock! And it was on sale again because they were discontinuing the series in our store. Win win!

After changing up the covers, we made one simple update to give the couch a little upgrade. Instead of putting the original legs back on, I gave them two quick coats of Minwax Gloss Polyshades in Espresso right over the existing finish. After they were dry (I let them sit for about 2 days just to be sure) we put them back on and the couch instantly looked more custom! It’s funny how such a little change can make such a big difference sometimes : )

With the new couch finally in a good spot and the large blank wall filled with our new lantern gallery wall, we’ve made some decent progress in this room! I have a few more updates I’d like to make to the fireplace to modernize that hearth and add storage/hide electronics with built-ins, but for now I’m so happy with how the room has come together!

Do you have any Karlstad in your life? How do you like yours? After a few months I can honestly say we love it, and with the ability to wash the covers makes the upkeep so simple!
